Very Early Extraordinary Lenci Oriental Boy Character Riding a Turtle
This is certainly one of THE Rarest pieces ever produced by this revered and prolific firm. The construction of this "dual" figure piece is SO intricate and detailed, it is difficult to believe that the piece is diminutive in size. The length of the turtle measures 6" from the tip of his tail to the tip of his pointed "nose." The Oriental boy who sits atop, measures 6" as well, He and his clothing are entirely made from "felt" material, with the exception of his queue that extends the length of his back which is created from a very fine twisted twine, and his woven straw cap and divine matching shoes.
He is lightly sewn onto the back of the turtle with but s few stitches under his pants, and then holds onto a twisted thread which is slipped between the fingers of each hand. Then the threading is encircled around the head of the magnificent turtle. All of the Asian child's features are painted, but the turtle, has tiny GLASS bead eyes! The turtle is also fitted with a felt harness, that fits like a "bit" in his mouth, for extra security for both he and his rider. And the detailing on this magical turtle is just fantastic! The pattern on his back, two-toned different shapes, and the way his legs and tail are attached is truly a work of art!
Lenci has certainly produced wonderful examples of animals, and their Oriental characters are superb. but Never have I seen such a unique piece. The expression on both figures is mesmerizing and enchanting to say the least. I have never seen another example, even inclusive of the early catalogs. Very Choice piece for the most discriminating Lenci collector.
