Marvelous and Rare Lenci Jackie Coogan Character
This 6.5" mint condition doll made by Lenci is circa 1925, and is an incredibly wonderful representation of movie star Jackie Coogan. The doll and his clothing are COMPLETELY original and executed in felt. Very special detailing on his clothing include the use of "double" silver buttons, (again original not replaced as usually seen), on his "split" suspenders, his fabulous original slip-on leather shoes, and amazingly intact and perfect "cigarette" in his mouth.
His hair is just too terrific in a bright orange silky, thick mohair, and his features are absolutely perfectly painted! His eyebrows are spaced high above his eyes giving him a wonderfully quizzical expression, added to by the thickness of his painted eyelashes, and pale blue coloring defining his eyes not just above but underneath as well which adds significantly to his color palette. And his eyes are WONDERFUL!! Painted so sublimely in a golden shade of brown with a slight glaze that gives them a fantastic realism. Perfect blushing on his cheeks and a very full "o" shaped closed mouth allowing for his cigarette
His ensemble is superb, starting with his big ultra dapper felt cap in soft brown with lighter color tan striping sewn all over in a criss-cross pattern, and a felt covered button detailing the very top. Double-button suspenders with hand stitched leather trim in the front and back, (very choice details) over a pearl button felt long sleeved cuffed shirt and his afore mentioned leather slippers (amazingly still present) match the leather detailing on the suspenders to give it extra pizzaz!!.
In fact, Jackie Coogan is said to be not only the first but the greatest "child star," made famous playing the sidekick to Charlie Chaplin in the movie "The Kid." His signature look was wearing his hair with long "bangs," over-sized overalls, and an over sized cap, exactly as he is presented here by Lenci. He was also one of the first to get into the merchandising business, trading on his name for peanut butter, dolls, and records. He is considered an international star easily recognizable to this day.
Jackie is in pristine condition and quite desirable!!!!!!!!!
